Existential Crisis Debugger

A terminal tool that fixes Python bugs with Claude, checks each fix by re-running the code, and explains the lesson through a short philosophical monologue.

The problem

Most debugging tools hand you a patch, you paste it in, and you forget it, so beginners and students keep repeating the same mistakes (off-by-one errors, division by zero, type mismatches). Debugging is also stressful and joyless, especially during late-night sessions and deadlines. Students learning to code, self-taught developers, and anyone debugging under pressure experience this most.

Existential Crisis Debugger is a terminal tool that fixes this. It runs your broken script, gets a fix from Claude, and verifies the fix by re-running the code (retrying up to 3 times). It then explains the rule behind the mistake and tells the bug's story as a funny philosophical monologue, so the lesson sticks. It also keeps a bug journal and shows your repeat weak spots, so it works as a tutor as well as a patcher.

How it works

Existential Crisis Debugger is a terminal tool that fixes your Python bugs and makes sure you learn from them.

How it works: You run python crisis.py yourfile.py. It runs your script, catches the error, and sends the code and error to Claude (Fable 5.1). Claude returns a corrected file, which the tool writes to a copy and runs to verify. If the fix still fails, the new error goes back to Claude for another try, up to 3 attempts. You then see a colored diff of what changed, the verified output, a one-line "Remember This" rule, and a short philosophical monologue (Camus, Nietzsche, Kierkegaard or Sartre) that ties your exact bug to an existential dilemma.

Core features: self-verifying fixes, a bug journal that tracks your mistake types, a --report command that shows your repeat weak spots, a --calm mode for fix-only output, and an --apply flag that overwrites your file with the verified fix (keeping a backup).

How it solves the problem: Most tools give you a patch that you paste and forget. Ours verifies that the fix works, explains the rule behind the mistake, and uses humor to make the lesson memorable. Because it remembers your past bugs ("this is the third off-by-one this week"), it works like a tutor and helps you stop repeating mistakes.

How Claude was used

In the team’s own words, from their submission.

It runs your script, catches the error, and sends the code and error to Claude (Fable 5.1). Claude returns a corrected file, which the tool writes to a copy and runs to verify. If the fix still fails, the new error goes back to Claude for another try, up to 3 attempts.
