Separates three problems in MPPCB’s ghat data — pollution before immersion, damage during it, poor recovery a week later — and the action each one needs.
The problem
MPPCB tests ghat water three times each festival (pre, during, after immersion). Results sit in 90 to 120 page PDFs that nobody lines up against legal limits or compares across years. The officer who decides where to send cleaning, aeration and extra testing decides from memory.
How it works
A raw-pollution ranking cannot tell the officer what to do. The data has three phases, which lets us separate two different problems:
Baseline pollution: bad before immersion starts (Bairagarh read DO 0 at pre in Durga 2023). Needs cleaning and monitoring. Immersion damage: worse during immersion. Across comparable rows, DO fell in 31 of 38 and BOD rose in 30 of 36. Needs aeration, capacity limits or extra testing during the event. Poor recovery: still worse one week later (after vs pre). Needs follow-up testing.
