Turns MPPCB PDF reports into one website that puts Bhopal’s seven ghats into action tiers on DO, BOD and pH, showing each reading’s report year and page.
The problem
Every year in Bhopal, idols are immersed in lakes during Ganesh and Durga festivals. The pollution control board (MPPCB) tests the water before immersion, during it, and one week later. But the results are stuck in big PDF reports. Site names change from page to page, some values are missing, and some readings have no units.
So a Bhopal Municipal Corporation officer who has to plan for Durga visarjan on 20 October 2026 can’t easily answer simple questions. Which ghats need attention first? Why? Which readings prove it? And where do we have no data at all?
How it works
Ghat Triage turns those PDF reports into one simple website for officers.
It reads 1,524 readings from 7 ghats across 2023 to 2025. It puts each ghat in a tier: A (act first), B (close group) or C (lowest concern). It uses oxygen (DO), BOD and pH, compared with CPCB Class B limits. Every reading shows its report year and page number, so an officer can check it in the original PDF. It never treats missing data as clean water. Measured, below-detection, likely-below-detection and not-sampled values are kept as four separate things. It shows a map of Bhopal, a data-gap grid, and a list of sites that have never been tested. It gives the officer a Top 3 Actions list, a Hindi and English one-page brief, and a WhatsApp-ready summary.
One finding stood out. In 14 of 19 ghat-years, oxygen was already lower before Durga immersion than before Ganesh immersion. So Durga starts from a weaker position.
I was careful to be honest. Tier C means “lowest concern”, not “safe”. The ranking is tested by re-running it many times with random samples, so we don’t show a fake exact order. The tool also lists its own limits: units are assumed, the BOD test method is unclear, and there is no coliform data. It is decision support, not a health check.
The officer login, upload and alerts are a demo only. Nothing is saved, and no WhatsApp message is really sent.
How Claude was used
I used Claude as a mentor and coding partner through the whole project. It helped me understand the water-quality ideas, such as DO, BOD and the CPCB limits and wrote the core code for the scoring, the four data states and the verification checks.
